Pioneer Dyes
Activities That Can Be Done
1. Mix natural dyes to see what happens.
2. Paint pictures with one dye color only.
3. Place water in a glass container. Put the container on the overhead projector. Add a natural dye coloring.
4. Talk about and look at colorful objects pioneers saw that we still see today? (Soap bubbles, sun coming through the leaves and branches of trees, direct and indirect sunlight and the effect of it on colors, rainbows, flowers, etc.)
5. Use natural dyes to have a color fair. Have one booth for each color. Have people provide experiences for all of the five senses which relate to the color for their booth.
6. Play a game to see which team can find the most variations of one color in nature such as red.
10. Talk about symbolic meanings of colors in pioneer times.
11. List some of the names of colors used in pioneer times. How are they like or different from names we use today.
12. Examine the various sources for each color used by pioneers.
13. Learn about the effects of mordants.
