Capturing a Caption

The observer does not start out with an interest equal to that of the creator of the bulletin board. Invent headlines that summarize the idea of the display at a glance. Involve the observer in what is said. This may be done by posing a question that is puzzling or invites investigation. Write titles using beginnings such as these.

If this were true what ?

Who was ?

What could ?

When did ?

Does this ?

Will this ?

Can you think of ?

Can you use ?

Can you add ?

Can you find ?

Where ?

Why ?

In a positive or exclamatory statement, direct address can motivate. Use word-play, puns, slogans, striking expressions, special sounds, or rhyming words. Find new meanings or applications for familiar expressions, titles of well-known books, plays, or films. Advertising slogans lend themselves to parody. Stereotyped and overused phrases will not be as motivating as new ideas created by the teacher or students. Brainstorm and add titles to the suggestions below.
