Learning About Social Studies Through Singing

Some stories can be told and remembered by singing. New or existing tunes can be used. The experiences of being kicked, swatted, and fallen on while milking were common. Try singing the following song to the tune of "Four and Twenty Blackbirds."

Milking When the Cow is Hungry

Sing a song of milking

In the early morn

When the cow is eating

Hay and all her corn.

Mine is reaching, pushing

To get every bit.

And I fear she'll fall upon me

Right here where I sit!

She has kicked and swatted

At the pesky flies.

She has smeared all over

Me the green cow pies.

My toes are sore and trampled.

I think they're black and blue.

And she's almost kicked the bucket

From my knees yet, too!

Milking is a job for

Those who are really tough!

Bossy's milk is good

But yes, the job is rough.

When I'm finished milking

I'll need a feast that's real

Made of hearty, tasty

Bacon, eggs, milk, and oatmeal!
