Catching the Flavor of Life's Experiences

Various forms of writing are needed to convey the experiences of humans in and with their environment. Smells, sounds, feelings, and sights are sometimes best described through poetry. Find or write poetry for or with students to help them understand ideas and experiences.

The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side of the Fence

Daisy stretched her neck and tongue

To reach beneath the fence.

The tasty turnips growing there

She'd have despite expense

Of scratches deep

And bruises sore

Upon her hide and hair.

She always knew she wanted more!

She'd learned the art

Of pushing for

Whatever tantalized and tasted good.

Her tongue desired ever more.

The grass was always greener

Beyond the barrier fence.

Her wants were quickly turned to needs.

She rarely used good sense.

But then one bright and sunny day

A simple dirty trick

Reformed her wishing ways.

It made her head feel really sick.

The farmer spread some fresh manure

Just where the greenest morsels grew.

Disgusted Daisy's nose pulled back

And sputtered "Pfuff! -- Phew!"
