Ways to Use Puppets in Mathematics

Puppets can be used to motivate, develop, or summarize mathematical concepts, skills, and attitudes. Combine knowledge of curricular content with a bit of imagination to create puppets of different shapes and sizes.

1. Puppets can be used to tell about problem situations which need mathematical solutions.

2. Create finger puppets and use them in counting rhymes.

3. Use finger puppets with easy subtraction and addition problems.

4. Design stick puppets which represent single numerals and let children talk with and about them.

5. Create groupings of objects, people, or animals to be used as stick puppets. Use them with children to solve basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems.

6. Use groupings of puppets to teach place value.

7. Place clusters of shadow puppets on the overhead projector to teach mathematical concepts.

8. Make geometric puppets (flat and solid) which can converse about size, shape, line, and angles.

9. Use electrical puppets to solve problems placed on question boards.

10. Estimation puppets - Place seeds or other small objects in various sized clear containers. Attach features and bodies. Create a dialogue in which the puppets make estimations about the contents of the containers.

11. Make puppets out of measuring devices. Have the puppets converse about measurement problems.

12. Make clock puppets with moveable arms. Let them "tell" about time.

13. Use puppets to move and talk about structures built with mathematical cubes.

14. Puppets can serve as leaders for singing or saying counting rhymes.

15. Construct puppets and sell them to others. Learn about the relationships between and among mathematical concepts, skills, and values in the market place.
