Children can learn the basic elements of a news item at an early level through the use of a glove puppet. Sew or glue Velcro to the fingers of a glove. Attach Velcro to objects which can be fastened to the fingers.

1. Who? - Attach a face to the finger.

2. What? - Attach an object to the finger.

3. When? - Attach a timepiece to the finger.

4. Where? - Fasten a map to the finger.

5. Why? - Place a question mark on the finger.

Place the glove on your hand and share a news story. Then let students put the glove on their hands as they share news items. Have them raise the appropriate finger as each question is answered.
