Frances Willard

Women in early America often did the work of men when they were away doing other tasks. They accomplished the same goals but were often not remembered for their deeds. A few were remembered because they accomplished things which men had been unable or unwilling to try. Frances Willard is remembered for ways in which she reformed the thinking of members of society.

1. Use the puppet to tell about work Frances Willard did with women's suffrage.

2. Interview the puppet concerning work with the Women's Christian Temperance Union. What did it take to organize and work with people concerning the social issues of the day?

3. Let the puppet tell about her work as an educator.

4. Have the puppet come to life today and discuss drug problems. Ask her what she would do today.

5. Talk about ordinary women of her time. Let the puppet tell how others helped her accomplish her goals.

6. Use a time line along with the puppet to tell about the period in which she lived.

7. Have the puppet tell about the drug problem of her day and how it related to that particular historical context.

8. What is it like not to be able to vote. Let the puppet talk with other women about those feelings.

9. What does an educator do? Have the puppet share the importance of the job of a teacher.

12. Who were the contemporaries of Frances Willard? Have her place other leaders of her day on the time line.
