Sally Ride

An astronaut puppet can be used to teach many things related to an aerospace unit.

1. Let the puppet tell what the job on her particular mission entailed.

2. Ask the puppet about feelings related to preparing for and carrying out the job.

3. Interview the puppet for the job. Find out why she was qualified.

4. Have the puppet tell about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

5. Have the puppet use a diagram of the space center to tell about her life.

8. Ask the puppet what knowledge, skills, and attitudes learned in grade school helped prepare her for the job of an astronaut.

9. Have the puppet talk about the importance of the space program. What benefits have resulted from space research?

10. What is a space flight like? Have the puppet share feelings, information about duties and general experiences.

11. Talk about decision making. Ask the puppet about the importance of decision making skills on a flight into space.

12. What kind of research takes place on space flights? Have the Sally Ride puppet tell how her research helped others.

13. Have the children share hopes for the future. Let the puppet respond to their hopes.

14. Use the puppet to talk about maps and how they relate to what is viewed from space.

15. Talk about location and measurement in space.
