Skills and the Social Studies

The social studies is directly responsible for teaching map and globe and time and chronology skills as well as the reading of specific terms related to the disciplines. Additional skills are taught in social studies as well as other areas of the curriculum. These include some of the following:

Reading skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, adapting reading to type of material

Study skills such as locating and organizing information

Research skills which include print and electronic sources

Thinking skills which include classifying interpreting, analyzing, summarizing, synthesizing, and evaluating information

Decision making and metacognitive skills

Skills which involve interpersonal relationships and social participation

Interpreting pictures, graphs, charts, and artifacts.

Using community resources

Conducting interviews and using the news
