Finger Plays to Teach Relative Directions

(Write finger plays to match the theme of any unit. These finger plays teach about relative location. They are done within the context of the "Apple" unit theme. Write the rhymes so they use the concepts or skills you want to teach. )

Five Little Apples

Five little apples hanging on a tree. (Fingers hang down.)

The first one said,

"I'm up high, as high as can be." (Hold finger high.)

The second one said,

"I'm near the ground. I'm low.

You can watch me change and grow." (Hold finger low)

The third one said,

"I'm near the inside.

There are lots of branches on the

outside." (Surround finger with hand.)

The fourth one said,

"I'm hanging from a horizontal branch.

I swing whenever I have a chance." (Place finger over arm held horizontally.)

The fifth one said,

"My vertical stem is strong and good.

It will help me hang on till I taste

sweet and good." (Hold finger very straight.)

The Apple Tree

Left and right the breezes blow. (Move left and right.)

Watch the leaves move to and fro. (Move fingers to and fro.)

High above I see a robin fly. (Point high above.)

It is way up in the sky. (Keep pointing up.)

Down it flies and sits to rest. (Move arm down.)

In the tree upon its nest. (Form nest with one hand and move other into it.)
