How can one learn some of the basic terms which facilitate the higher level thinking involved in geography? Flash cards can help.
Political boundaries and place names change rapidly. Consult recent almanacs or atlases for information.
Knowledge of people and places beyond our own is important in a world where daily experiences with others are possible with people almost anywhere on earth.
Students may want to make their own personal sets of cards in order to increase their geographic knowledge.
Blank map flash cards can be colored in a variety of ways to teach basic knowledge. Water-based markers or colored pencils can be used if cards are to be laminated. Lamination of the paper stiffens the card. Maps may also be glued to a piece of tagboard.
What Can be Taught?
1. Names of continents, countries, or oceans.
2. Names of capitals or major metropolitan areas.
3. Places with like features. (Political, physical, economic, religious, social, historical, or linguistic)
4. Students can match or categorize and sort cards on the basis of like or different features or play games such as concentration with a double set of cards.
