The National Standards for Social Studies (1994) indicate that students in the early grades should have experiences that help them "demonstrate an understanding that different people may describe the same event or situation in diverse ways, citing reasons for the differences in views;" (p. 34). In the middle grades students are to "demonstrate an understanding that different scholars may describe the same event or situation in different ways but must provide reasons or evidence for their views;" (p. 34)
Events are listed on the following calendars. As these are studied children can become aware that what is considered a time of celebration for one group may be a time of sadness for another. People throughout the world view special days and events from their own cultural perspectives.
Find events from various cultures to add to those listed on the calendar for each month. Many holidays are moveable and therefore change from year to year. Add those in their appropriate places each year.
