Choke Cherry

Prunus virginiana

This small tree grows to a height of six to twenty feet. The egg-shaped, sharp-toothed leaves are not as smooth as those of the black cherry. Blossoms on a choke cherry tree form in long, white clusters.

The purplish fruits attract many birds. When eaten the cherries create a puckered feeling in the mouth. Juice from the cherries can be used to make jams, jellies, and pies.
