Tentative Meeting Times and Places 

Constitution for the Social Studies/History Educational Organization

I. This organization shall be known as the Social Studies/History Educational Organization

II. Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Social Studies/History Educational Organization is to bring together all Education Majors interested in Social Studies and History. In addition, this organization intends to form a cooperative environment for the sharing of materials, knowledge, and ideas that will enhance the training of future educators.

III. Candidates for Membership

A. Candidates for the Social Studies/History Educational Organization shall be chosen in accordance with the Constitution.

B. Membership in this organization is limited to those students at the University of Northern Iowa who have demonstrated their interest, cooperation, and leadership in carrying out those activities which this organization desires to perpetuate.

IV. Social Studies/History Organization Dues

A. The dues of the Social Studies/History Organization shall be payable at the beginning of the semester in which the member joins. All members shall pay $5 on a yearly basis.

B. The dues shall be for the purpose of club expenses.

V. Social Studies/History Organization Financing

A. In addition to dues, financing may be obtained through contributions, fund raisers, and student activity fee allocations.

VI. Faculty Advisor

A. This organization shall at all times have a faculty advisor who shall be recommended by the Social Studies/History Organization.

B. The advisor of this organization shall be a member of the faculty or the administrative staff of the University of Northern Iowa.

C. At the beginning of each fall term, members shall approve the present advisor or select a new advisor.

D. In the event of the resignation of the advisor during the course of his/her advisorship, the voting body of the Social Studies/History Organization shall recommend a new advisor subject to his/her acceptance of the position.

VII. Officers of the Social Studies/History Organization

A. The officers of the Social Studies/History Organization shall consist of the president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, whereas, the offices of secretary and treasurer may be combined into one office.

B. The officers shall serve for a period of one semester.

C. Election of officers shall be held at the first meeting each semester. Induction of officers will be held immediately. Officers may be elected by a simple majority vote of the active membership.

D. The officers of this organization shall constitute an executive council for the transaction of business of any emergency nature. Committee chairpeople shall be ex-officio members of the council.

E. Only a member who will be active and present during the subsequent semester shall be qualified for office.

F. Vacancies in office shall be filled by special election.

G. Upon the unexcused absence of an officer of the organization at two consecutive meetings, he/she shall lose standing as an officer. The organization shall elect a more active member to replace him/her at the regular meeting.

VIII. Duties of the Officers

A. President
1. To preside at all regularly scheduled meetings of the organization and of the executive council.

2. To call and preside at all special meetings.

3. To be an ex-officio member of all committees.

4. To direct all activities of the Social Studies/History Organization not specifically herein stated as duties of some other officers.

5. To be responsible for the actions of this organization.

B. Vice President

1. To be responsible for programming.

2. To assume the duties of the president in his/her absence, and to serve until a new president has been elected in case of resignations.

3. to assist the president in the executive duties.

4. To assume the responsibility of updating the by-laws and the Constitution.

5. To direct committees' work.

C. Secretary

1. To keep the minutes of all meetings.

2. To conduct the roll call at each meeting.

3. To handle routine correspondence.

4. To maintain adequate office supplies.

5. To collect and compile all reports of officers and chairpeople of the various committees.

D. Treasurer

1. To keep books for the Social Studies/History Organization and prepare them for auditing.

2. To collect and deposit dues.

3. To collect and pay bills.

4. to act as general custodian of the funds of the organization, keep an itemized account of receipts and expenditures, being prepared to submit a complete report at each meeting of the organization.

IX. Regular and Special Meetings

A. Regular meetings shall be called two weeks after the beginning of each semester.

B. The organization shall conduct regular meetings at two week intervals with exceptions made for vacations.

C. Special meetings may be called by the president or at the request of five or more of the active members.

X. Amending and Ratifying By-Laws

A. The by-laws may be amended at a regular meeting by a 2/3 majority of the active members present. The amendment must be presented at a previous meeting.

B. These by-laws, to become effective, must be ratified by a 3/4 vote of the members present at a regular meeting of the Social Studies/History Organization.
